A total of 120 shoemakers in Portugal have signed on to cut the industry’s emissions in half by 2030.  

Shoe designer Bolflex is going an extra step, grinding up and melting down worn-out shoe soles, then recycling the soles into ‘eco-rubber,’ which can then be used to create new shoes.

As part of the Portuguese Footwear Association’s new ’Shoe Green Pact,” companies in Europe’s third largest footwear industry vow to improve the sector’s energy efficiency, product design and packaging.   

They hope the efforts will alleviate some of the environmental impacts of the constant production of so many new shoes around the world.
