Former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro will be called to testify in the investigation into the allegations that he and his wife attempted to illegally import $3.2 million worth of jewelry, gifted to them by the Saudi Arabian government, into the country in October of 2021.

Justice Minister Flavio Dino said the inquiries are in progress, and Bolsonaro will be served with a subpoena at a future date. It is unclear if Bolsonaro was traveling back to Brazil on Wednesday from his self imposed exile in the U.S. state of Florida.

Bolsonaro’s son had earlier tweeted that on Wednesday, March 15, his father would return to Brazil, after leaving the country for the U.S. just days before he was succeeded by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Brazilian federal police and its tax authority have both opened investigations into the jewelry allegations, after the gifted diamonds were found by customs agents in the backpack of an aide of Bolsonaro’s then-mines and energy minister, Bento Albuquerque, upon return from the delegation’s official visit to Saudi Arabia.

Government officials are forbidden from accepting high value gifts for themselves, and Brazilian citizens are required to declare anything they bring into the country valued over $1000. Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing, and has reportedly agreed to address a second gift of a men’s watch, ring, pair of cufflinks, pen and prayer-bead set, estimated to be worth at least $75,000.
