Sri Lanka’s economy contracted by 7.8 percent in 2022 from the previous year, according to the government data released on Wednesday. Moody’s Investors Service predicts the country’s growth is expected to rebound in 2024.

High inflation, economic mismanagement combined with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic left the country running out of money to pay for food and fuel at the start of last year and triggered its worst financial crisis since 1948.
