The Muslim month of Ramadan began in many countries around the world with the sighting of the new moon. Muslims hold the month in high esteem as it is believed to be the time when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Many Muslims will fast from dawn through sunset each day this month, refraining from eating, drinking, or having sexual intimacy during those hours.
After the breaking of the fast at sunset, known as iftar, many will spend the nights in communal worship in what is known as the Taraweeh prayers.

This is a time for many to give abundantly in charity and help those less fortunate.
