At least 119,000 people have been wounded by tear gas canisters and other chemical irritants used by authorities to disperse and control crowds since 2015, a new report “How Crowd-Control Weapons Impact Health and Human Rights” has found.
The groups behind the comprehensive study, Physicians for Human Rights and the International Network of Civil Liberties Organizations, say it is impossible to count the casualties from products made by the largely unregulated crowd-control device industry.
The report says rubber bullets and other multi-projectile devices should be banned in public settings, and calls for more government restrictions and professional testing on weapons like tear gas, water cannons and acoustic weapons, which can be used indiscriminately by law enforcement.
