Israeli media is reporting that the country's defense chief will call on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt his controversial judicial overhaul, as protests continue to sweep the nation.
In a move that has further stoked tensions in Israel, the country's parliament has passed a new law preventing a prime minister from being declared unfit to hold office by the attorney general.
The law is part of Netanyahu's government's plan to limit the powers of the judiciary, which has been met with months of protests.
Netanyahu himself is on trial on corruption charges, and the law is seen as being in his interests. Hours after the vote, opponents of the plan began what they called a "day of paralysis", further underscoring the deep divisions within Israeli society.
Tens of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets to voice their opposition, with police having responded with water cannons to clear highways, and arresting dozens for public disturbance.
The situation remains tense, with many concerned about the impact of the proposed changes on Israel's democratic institutions. Despite this, Netanyahu has pushed ahead with the legislation, arguing that it will restore balance among branches of government.
As tensions continue to rise, many are calling on the government to listen to the voices of the people and put a stop to the judicial overhaul.
