For villagers in Southern Ethiopia’s Oromia region, three years of extended drought have complicated pastoral life.  The region has seen four consecutive rainy seasons that failed to deliver rain, and animals are dying.

Local government official Jilo Wile fears the Oromo residents will be the next victims of the La Niña-induced droughts if the rains don’t come.

Parched earth and cattle carcasses surround the Kura Kalicha camp for the people internally displaced by drought near the town of Das.  Wile says there are more than 100 people in critical condition and malnourished from starvation in the camp. He says this number includes children, elders and pregnant women.

The federal government of Ethiopia said it was working with aid organizations to help those in need, but the help appears slow to come.  Last year, the country received only half of the $3.34 billion required for its humanitarian needs, complicated by the two-year conflict that raged in the northern regions.
