For the past eight years, global mean temperatures have been the highest ever recorded. Sea levels have risen to record levels, rising 4.62mm a year since 2013, a trend expected to continue for centuries.Antarctic sea ice fell to its lowest level ever recorded, while European glacier melt was at its highest level in 2022.
Concentrations of the three main greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, reached record highs in 2021, and continued rising in 2022. Almost 90 percent of the trapped energy in our climate system goes into the ocean, skyrocketing ocean heat content, which reached a new observed record high in 2022.Close to 58 percent of the ocean surface on Earth experienced a marine heatwave in 2022.
