Over 100 overseas Chinese gathered on Saturday in the U.S. state of Maryland, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the National Association for China’s Peaceful Unification (NACPU).
Xu Xueyuan, charge d'affaires of the Chinese embassy in the U.S., expressed appreciation for the leading role of the NACPU in promoting China’s peaceful reunification over the past 50 years.
"Taiwan belongs to all the Chinese people, including the 23 million Taiwan compatriots. Moves to separate Taiwan from China represent the serious crime of secession. ‘Taiwan independence’ is a dead end and will never succeed," Xu said at the ceremony.
"The Taiwan question is the very core of China's core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations," Xu emphasized and urged the U.S. to stop hollowing out the one-China principle and to safeguard the political foundation of China-U.S. relations.
