The nuclear disaster sent radioactive materials raining down over a swathe of Eastern Europe in 1986.  The Soviet leadership of that time did not inform the world of the explosion for two days.

The accident forced tens of thousands to relocate, and killed 31 people instantaneously.  Another 115,000 people were estimated to have died later from radiation-related illnesses. A memorial for the firefighters killed in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster was also held in Kyiv.
