Television writers go on strike in the United States
Television writers go on strike in the United States

Thousands of Hollywood writers behind some of the hottest television series and talk shows have gone on strike on Tuesday, May 2, after negotiations between union leaders and major studios broke down on Monday.

The disruption to television production is expected to be immense, with late-night talk shows predicted to be the first to see shutdowns and begin airing reruns.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) got behind  the first work strike in 15 years, with various production locations around the U.S. expected to be picketed this week.

The striking writers say massive studios like Disney and Netflix, which stream content to millions of viewers, need to pay its writers more in the changing times.

In addition to better compensation, the striking writers are also seeking safeguards that ensure they will not be asked to rewrite draft scripts created by Artificial Intelligence apps in the future.

Almost half of writers on television series work for minimum salary levels, the WGA, which represents 11,500 writers, said.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents studios, said it had proposed “generous increases in compensation,” and was willing to increase its offer.
