A Manhattan federal court jury has found former U.S. President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming magazine writer E. Jean Carrolls, but said he did not rape her. The nine-member jury awarded Carroll about $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages after just under three hours of deliberation.

The unanimous verdict marks a legal setback for Trump, who is campaigning to retake the presidency in 2024.

During the civil trial, Carroll testified that Trump raped her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the mid-1990s, and then harmed her reputation by labeling her claims as a "complete con job," "a hoax," and "a lie" in an October 2022 Truth Social post.

The trial featured testimony from two other women who alleged Trump sexually assaulted them decades ago, as well as excerpts from a 2005 "Access Hollywood" video in which Trump made crude comments about women.

Trump's legal team chose not to present a defense, and Trump has denied all allegations of sexual misconduct.
