After appearing to have gotten away with a series of massive lies surrounding his personal and professional biography prior to serving in the U.S. government, New York Republican Representative George Santos was arrested on Wednesday and charged with wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements to Congress.
Though the U.S. has a presumption of innocence, some who have joined in the calls for the lawmaker to step down, are viewing Wednesday’s indictment as a kind of comeuppance for Santos, who was elected to serve by his constituents in New York’s third congressional district before being publicly exposed as a serial fib-teller.
Santos turned himself in on Wednesday, and is expected to appear in a federal courthouse in Long Island to address prosecutors’ allegations that he induced supporters to donate to a company under the false pretense he would use the funds for his campaign.

Prosecutors accuse Santos of using the money on designer clothes and car payments.
He is also accused of lying about his finances on congressional disclosure forms and previously receiving unemployment benefits despite being employed.
“Sooner or later, whether he chooses to or not, both the truth and justice will be delivered to him,” said U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro, a Republican representing parts of upstate New York.
“I think in America, you’re innocent till proven guilty,” House Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy said.
