Atlanta’s City council voted 11-4 on Tuesday, June 6, in favor of a firearms and police training center.  The center will cost $31 million in public funds for the controversial Atlanta Public City Safety Training Center. Opponents have dubbed the project “Cop City.”  It is expected to cost about $90 million once completed.

Opponents of the massive “real world training facility” say the South River Forest will be destroyed during construction.Proponents say the complex will provide necessary training for Atlanta’s police and firefighters.

Environmental and civil rights activists camped out in the forest for months. They argue the training at the facility would lead to more instances of police brutality in the U.S.

In January, police killed a 26-year-old activist during a clearing operation of the protest site on the outskirts of Atlanta.Hundreds of protesters made their opposition to the project outside City Hall on Tuesday.
