Authorities in the U.S. state of Texas started installing a new floating barrier along the Rio Grande river on Wednesday, July, 12, 2023.

It’s the latest effort by the state’s Republican Governor Greg Abbott to secure the border with Mexico.Strings of orange plastic buoys measuring four feet wide will float in the middle of the river, and are expected to be outfitted with netting underneath to prevent people from swimming under them.

Leaders in Texas have already spent over $4 billion on “Operation Lone Star,” its push to try to prevent illegal migration in the state. Under the operation, Texas has bussed migrants to liberal states and has authorized the National Guard to make arrests.
