A newly released report from an independent agency has found the recent death of a child while under U.S. Border Patrol custody was preventable.
The report says Border Patrol does not have the protocols for assessing the medical needs of children with preexisting conditions. In May, 8-year-old Anadith Danay Reyes Alvarez died after she got sick while under federal custody in Texas. Anadith had a chronic heart condition and sickle cell anemia.
An internal investigation also found Border Patrol medical staff declined to review the girl’s file. The AP reports that Alvarez's mother told officials about her daughter's condition but staff wasn't notified when they were moved to a second facility designated for families. Days later the girl tested positive for the influenza and her health worsened. Three other children have died in Border Patrol custody this year.
Illegal border crossings dropped in June of 2023 to their lowest level since U.S. President Joe Biden first took office, according to a statement.
The Biden administration attributed the decline to recent changes in immigration policies.
While border crossings have dropped, many migrants still remain in U.S. border cities.
A bus carrying dozens of migrants from Brownsville, Texas arrived in Los Angeles, California on Tuesday evening. This is the fourth bus of migrants to arrive in LA in recent weeks, according to the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles.
About half of the migrants were from Venezuela and others from countries including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Haiti. The immigration coalition believes the bus was funded by Texas state officials, CNN reports.
Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott, along with Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have previously sent buses of migrants to several cities, including Denver, New York City, and Chicago.
Upon their arrival in LA, migrants met community groups who provided food, clothes and legal consultations. The migrants will be connected with family or sponsors across the West Coast, the immigration coalition says.
