Guatemala's recent elections saw independent progressive candidate Bernardo Arévalo clinch a decisive 58% victory against former first lady Sandra Torres.

However, despite the landslide win, the silence from Torres and her party signals potential challenges to the results. Weeks before the election, Arévalo's Seed Movement party came under scrutiny, with the attorney general's office raising issues about their registration which lead to a temporary suspension of their legal status.

The elections have thrown a spotlight on the nation's long-standing corruption issues. Past anti-corruption campaigns, once bolstered by the UN, have seen a decline in recent years.

As a result, public trust has waned, leading to widespread protests demanding transparent electoral processes and addressing broader socio-economic concerns.
