It will be one year on Saturday, September 16, since a 22-year-old woman ,Mahsa Amini, died in Iran’s morality police custody after being arrested for not wearing a head covering, or hijab.

Protests erupted in the streets and universities of Iran after Amini’s death, which Iranian authorities said was due to a heart attack.Witnesses allege Amini was severely beating after being detained.

The crackdown on the protests resulted in 500 people being killed, including 71 minors. More than 22,000 people were detained before the protests slowly fizzled out in 2023.

“The weaponization of ‘public morals’ to deny women and girls their freedom of expression is deeply disempowering and will entrench and expand gender discrimination and marginalization,” independent United Nations experts said earlier this month.

Iran’s rulers have blamed western forces for fomenting the public outrage over Amini’s death.Iranian officials have reportedly increased their efforts to curb dissent ahead of any potential gatherings on the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death.
