Net migration of urban city-dwellers into more rural communities is a trend that began during the pandemic and has continued into 2023.

More people now live in rural areas than in metropolitan cities, according to recent  U.S. Census data.

As the population of an appealing rural area grows, the resentment of natives can rise along with it.

Retirees, remote workers, and those inspired by a less-urban way of living may all have been prompted to move to by factors relating to the pandemic.

Nearly a third of non-metro U.S. counties have increased population size since the pandemic, despite the communities experiencing spikes in death rates due to COVID-19, demographer Ken Johnson says.

Some have flocked to rural hotspots like Montana or Appalachia, places that host an abundance of wildlife and a sense of isolation.

Home prices in the most popular 10 rural counties in the U.S. have surged more than 40 percent in the last three years, Bloomberg reports.

Large amounts of new residents have the potential to overload a remote county’s resources, such as amenities, schools, roads, and affordable housing.

Enough of an influx can even change the voter demographic of a remote county.Some locals in more rural areas say they are witnessing a rise in political divisions amongst neighbors.
