The Biden administration quietly announced on Thursday, Oct. 5, a policy shift which will allow for an addition of a new section to the U.S. border wall with Mexico in Starr County, Texas.

The news comes as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other high level American officials are in Mexico City to meet with the Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who rejected the plans to add to the wall at his morning press conference Thursday.

“This permit for the construction of the wall is a step backwards because it does not solve the problem. We need to address the causes” of illegal immigration, López Obrador said.

The leaders are discussing increased migration, trade, security, investments, and the trafficking of the drug fentanyl, a synthetic opioid.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas are also participating in the talks, along with their Mexican counterparts.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is separately in Mexico City on Thursday, on a trip through Latin American to learn more about migration paths.

Adams said he wanted to spread the message to migrants that New York City is “at capacity” after receiving close to 120,000 asylum-seekers bussed from states like Texas and Florida.
