Is Lebanon getting dragged into the Gaza-Israel conflict?
Both Lebanese and Israelis are beefing up their military presence on the border. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has expanded to Lebanon with four Lebanese killed on Oct. 9. Israeli bombardment killed four members of Hezbollah in Lebanon in cross-border raids. The raids on the Lebanese side were launched by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. A Hezbollah officials initially denied the group’s involvement in that attack but later returned fire when more people were killed.
On Oct. 8, Hezbollah fired dozens of shells and rockets on Israeli positions in the Shebaa Farms. The Shebaa Farms are a disputed area that was captured by Israel from Syria in 1967. There were no casualties from the Oct. 8 cross-border shelling.
Officials from Hezbollah endorsed the operation by Hamas and backed the group. Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah has not given the green light yet for his group to join the fighting. While Hezbollah supporters are ready to engage in war, that hasn’t been the case for the rest of Lebanon. Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati said his country doesn’t want to engage in war with Israel.
