For those who can get it, citizenship of another country is often considered a cherished prize, not least due to the administrative hurdles and cost.

But what about the barriers and cost to giving up citizenship? They’ve been brought sharply into focus in the U.S. by a group of overseas citizens battling Washington over the cost of cutting all ties with their country of birth.
