The USDA found that 12.8 percent of U.S. households in 2022 were food insecure, or had low and very low food security.

Food-insecure households were not able to provide enough food for all their family members due to a lack of resources.

Food insecurity in the U.S. was higher in 2022 than previous years.

The USDA found that 8.8 percent of households with children in the U.S. were food insecure at times during 2022.

Food-secure households spent 15 percent more money on food than food-insecure households of the same size, including purchases made with benefits like SNAP.

55 percent of food-insecure households reported using at least one of the three federal nutrition assistance programs  such as SNAP, WIC, and the National School Lunch Program.
