First Quantum Minerals eventually was forced to halt its operations in Panama.Large protests have been happening daily in Panama against the mine. Thousands of Panamanians demanded the mine’s contract be annulled. They say the presence of the mine violates Panama’s sovereignty.

Activists also argue the mining threatens Panama’s environment.
Fisherman joined the cause, angry over the company’s appropriation of land and water.

On Tuesday, Panama’s Supreme Court declared Quantum’s contract unconstitutional.

The mine was ordered to be shut down.Protests continue as activists demand concrete steps to close the site.
