Thursday, December 14, is the 11th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in the U.S.
Flags in Newtown, Connecticut will be flown at half staff to honor the 20 first graders and six adult staff members killed by a 20-year-old gunman using an AR-15 rifle and two handguns in 2012.
The murders remain in the collective memory of the United States, and prompted national efforts to address the gun violence epidemic in the country.
Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in the U.S.
In 2022, families of nine Sandy Hook victims agreed to a $73 million settlement from Remington, a maker of one of the guns used in the shooting. It was the first time a gun manufacturer was held responsible for its role in a mass shooting.
RemArms formerly the Remington Arms Company, said this month it will close one of its manufacturing facilities in New York by March 2024.

U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York was joined by members of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and other House Democrats in Washington, D.C. on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the tragedy.
Jeffries said Democrats are ready, willing, and able to join Congressional Republicans in advancing gun legislation in America. Jeffries said ‘extreme MAGA Republicans’ are standing in the way of progress toward ending the gun violence epidemic in the U.S., where 635 mass shootings took place in 2023.
