A senior Chinese diplomat in the United States says Hong Kong should be at the forefront of promoting China-U.S. exchanges.
Minister Xu Xueyuan from the Chinese Embassy in Washington was invited to deliver a video speech on December 15 at the inaugural conference of the Centre on Contemporary China and the World (CCCW) at the University of Hong Kong.
She said Hong Kong is a window to connect China with the rest of the world and also a channel that allows China to share its development dividends with the world. She also said it is hoped that the center in Hong Kong will become a new platform to help China and the United States understand each other.
Minister Xu also introduced the consensus agreed at the China-U.S. summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden in San Francisco. She emphasized that the San Francisco meeting is not the end but a new starting point for stabilizing and improving China-U.S. relations.
Xu said that China is willing to work with the United States to make the "San Francisco vision" a reality. She said it is hoped that Hong Kong friends will contribute to the realization of the vision.
The theme of the Hong Kong conference was "A Renewed Hub and a New Horizon," and it brought together well-known scholars and people from all walks of life from China and the United States to give themed speeches and conduct fireside conversations and group discussions.
The CCCW at the University of Hong Kong is led by Li Cheng, former director of the China Center at the Brookings Institution. The center will focus on many areas, including scientific and technological changes, climate change and new energy, economic and financial reforms, and China-U.S. relations.
