The holiday season was marred by violence, as gunfire erupted at two U.S. shopping malls in the days before Christmas.
There have been nearly 650 mass shootings in the U.S. in 2023, making it the second-highest number since the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) began recording data in 2014. The highest number of mass shootings recorded (689) happened in 2021.
At least 706 people have been killed in these events, which are defined as a shooting incident with at least four injuries or deaths, not including the suspected shooter.
As of Dec. 26, at least 42,151 people died from gun-related events throughout the country this year. Nearly 18,500 were killed in a homicide, murder, or unintentional shooting, while almost 23,700 were ruled a suicide.
Only six U.S. states have not had a mass shooting so far this year. Those states are Montana, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.
The October events in Lewiston, Maine, were the most deadly this year, with 18 people killed and 13 injured across two locations.
More than 6,000 children, up to age 17, have been shot this year, according to GVA.
