Amid Saturday’s frigid temperatures, hundreds of pro-choice demonstrators gathered at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., to argue that it’s not just reproductive freedom that is on the line in the United States - but democracy itself.
Women’s March protests took place in many states on Saturday, with organizers calling the national event a strategic intervention to help galvanize voters for the 2024 elections, secure abortion access, and counter far-right extremism in the country.
The demonstration in D.C. came on the heels of Friday’s March for Life, which brought thousands of anti-abortion campaigners to the U.S. Supreme Court building to push for the complete elimination of the procedure.
At Saturday’s march, some pro-choice demonstrators were seen verbally clashing with counter protesters.
January 22 will mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that granted the right to an abortion in the U.S. and which was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022.
Women’s March organizers say their movement is “Bigger than Roe,” and have vowed to unseat any politician who threatens the families, freedoms, and futures of women in the United States.
