At a celebration event for the Chinese Lunar New Year on January 21, 2023, a gunman opened fire at Star Dance Studio, killing 11 people and injuring 9 more, leaving the Asian American community in shock and devastation.
A year later, the community is still in the process of healing. Despite the chilly weather, hundreds still came together to mourn and honor those who lost their lives in the tragedy by lighting candles, making lanterns and wreaths, writing hopeful messages, and offering flowers in remembrance.
The vigil also provided a space for reflection and healing for residents to stand together against gun violence. Both city officials and residents are advocating for gun control reform in the wake of the tragedy.
“Gun Violence needs to end. It needs to end here,” Monterey Park Mayor Jose Sanchez said.
Firefighters from different counties also brought comfort dogs to support to the community.
