Designated by the United Nations, World Refugee Day is observed annually on June 20th. The day draws attention to the plight of those who have been forced to flee their homes and, often, their countries as a result of conflict, violence, or persecution.
In Brazil, an official report published last week showed that the number of foreigners granted refugee status has increased dramatically, by more than 12-fold in the past two years. In Rio de Janeiro, a museum exhibition is marking the day, with the participation of many refugees.
