Day three of the Paris Olympics gave no shortage of stunning performances, crushing misses, and some surprising delays, as the world’s best athletes competed for the coveted medals on the world stage.

China’s Xu Jiayu won silver in the men’s 100M backstroke final, while players from Team China took the silver medal in the men’s team gymnastics final on Monday. Japan won the gold while the U.S. claimed the bronze, ending the squad’s 16-year Olympic medal drought.
Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan claimed the gold in the women’s 200-meter freestyle. Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh claimed her first gold medal in the women’s 400-meter individual medley.
South Africa received its first gold of the Paris Olympics on Monday as Tatjana Smith won the woman’s 100-meter breaststroke title, with China’s world champion Tang Qianting winning the silver medal, and Ireland’s Mona McSharry taking the bronze.

Defending champion Cheung Ka-long of Hong Kong, China, retained his title in men’s foil, beating first-time Olympian Filippo Macchi of Italy 15-14 in a disputed bout.
China’s Yang Junxuan placed fifth in the women’s 200-meter freestyle final.
China’s Wang Xueer and Wan Letian failed to advance to the medal event with a semifinal time of 59.89 and 100.06 respectively in the women’s 100-meter backstroke semifinals.
Ukraine claimed its first medal of the Games on Monday in the women’s sabre competition, as Olga Kharlan won bronze for the country, rallying from a six-point deficit to beat Choi Sebin of South Korea.
Manon Apithy-Brunet made history as the first French fencer to win an Olympic title in women’s saber, taking the silver on Monday.

Japan’s Yuto Horigome retained his Olympic men’s street skateboarding title, landing the highest-scoring trick in the final round of Monday’s competition. American Jagger Eaton took the silver, with another U.S. skateboarder Nyjah Huston claiming the bronze.
Christa Deguchi won the women’s under 57kg gold medal on Monday, the first-ever Olympic judo title for Canada.
Hidayat Heydarov of Azerbaijan took home gold in the men’s under 73kg final at the Paris Games.
China advanced with a 3-2 victory in the women’s volleyball preliminary round, over its first opponent the U.S. on Monday. The team will now gear up to play the host nation France.

China’s Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha secured a 4-2 victory over Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin of South Korea in the table tennis mixed doubles semifinals on Monday. They will advance to play Ri Jong-sik and Kim Kum-yong of DPRK in the finals.
Olympics surfing was called off in Tahiti after the men’s third round on Monday, as the arrival of a storm put an end to the competition for the day.
Organizers of the Games also canceled swimming training in the River Seine on Monday, as they waited to learn if pollution levels will fall low enough to hold the men’s triathlon in the river on Tuesday.
