Olympics Day 6: Two golds for China, Americans Biles, Ledecky shine

The sixth day of the Paris Olympics saw a series of remarkable performances and achievements on Thursday, August 1.

China’s Liu Yukun won gold in the men's 50-meter rifle 3 positions shooting final. Liu, who set the world record earlier this year, delivered a final score of 463.6 points, edging out Ukraine's Serhiy Kulish by 2.3 points. The win also marked China's fourth gold in shooting at this year's Games.

World record holder Yang Jiayu also secured China’s first athletics gold at the Paris Olympics by winning the women's 20km race walk with a seasonal best of 1:25:54. The win marked China’s fourth Olympic gold in the women’s 20km race walk and also added to China’s 11 gold medal total so far in Paris.

Zheng Qinwen made Chinese tennis history in women's singles by defeating Iga Świątek, the Polish world No. 1 and top seed in the Olympic tennis tournament. Zheng will face Wimbledon semifinalist Donna Vekic of Croatia for the gold medal on Saturday, August 3.

In the tennis mixed doubles, Chinese pair Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen made a stunning comeback to beat Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands, advancing to the final.

China's mixed doubles badminton pair, Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong, also delivered a commanding performance against Japan's Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino, winning 21-14, 21-15. They will compete against South Korea's Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun in the final for the first badminton gold medal.

American gymnast Simone Biles won gold in the women's gymnastics individual all-around, adding another milestone to her career. Biles became the third woman in Olympic history to win the individual all-around gold medal twice, and the first since the 1960s. Fellow American Suni Lee took bronze in the same event.

In swimming, Canadian Summer McIntosh stormed to victory in the women's 200m butterfly, setting an Olympic record with a time of 2:03.03. She finished ahead of America's Regan Smith who took silver and China’s Zhang Yufei who won bronze.

The Australian women's 4x200m freestyle relay team also set an Olympic record, winning gold with a time of 7:38.08, followed by the United States in silver and China in bronze. Katie Ledecky's silver in the U.S. relay team was her 13th career Olympic medal, making her the most decorated female Olympic swimmer of all time.

Team USA's Kate Douglass also won the women's 200m breaststroke, breaking her own American record with a time of 2:19.24.

China's Wang Shun advanced to the men's 200m individual medley finals, and Peng Xuwei advanced to the women's 200m backstroke finals.

China is now in first place in the current Olympic gold medal rankings at the end of day six, with 11 gold medals, followed by the United States and France.
