The People’s Republic of China is tied with the U.S. on the gold medal leaderboard as of Sunday, August 4. Team China won a number of competitions on day 9 of the Paris Olympics, including the men’s 100-meter freestyle medley relay, which saw the end of the U.S.’ 40-year-long reign over the race.
The thrilling heat saw a photo finish, with the Chinese team’s anchor and 100-meter freestyle gold medalist, Pan Zhanle, overtaking the U.S. swimmer in the final leg of the race to bring home the gold for China.
China’s women’s team also won bronze in the 100-meter freestyle medley relay in a competition that saw the U.S. break the world record to win gold.
Not far behind the U.S. and China was the French team, who took home bronze and nearly won the competition themselves.
Team China also continued their dominance in table tennis after Fan Zhendong won gold in the men’s singles competition, joining fellow compatriot, Chen Meng, from the women’s team to win the Olympic competition.
Zhengdong cemented his legacy as one of the greatest table tennis players in Olympic history after winning the singles competition, joining fellow Chinese greats like Ma Long, Zhang Like and Wang Hao to win multiple medals.
In men’s artistic gymnastics, China’s Liu Yang won the gold in the rings competition, with fellow countryman You Jingyuan winning silver.
The Chinese men’s and women’s gymnastics team has now won six medals, including one gold and four silvers.
China’s women’s boxing team is hoping to secure their own golds in the coming days, following 75kg boxer Li Qian advanced to the semifinal, guaranteeing herself an Olympic medal.
In addition to Qian, China’s Chang Yuan will compete for the 63.5kg gold medal in women’s boxing after advancing to the finals on Sunday, August 4.
Women’s olympic boxing will also have its first ever medalist from the Refugee Olympic Team after boxer Djankeu Ngamba reached the 75kg weight’s semifinals - she is guaranteed at least a bronze medal.
In men’s tennis, the young Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz, faced off against the legendary Novak Djokovic of Serbia, in what was a rematch of the 2024 Wimbledon championship.
However, this time around, it was Djokovic who won the tournament, bringing home gold for Serbia.
Finally, in the highly anticipated men’s 100 meter dash, the U.S.’ Noah Lyles edged out Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson to win gold by less than one-one hundredth of a second.
