The Paris Olympic Games came to a celebratory closing on Sunday, August 11, after two weeks of intense competitions, controversial calls and outcomes, and record-breaking feats.
France’s Leon Marchand, who won four gold medals and one bronze at the games, extinguished the flame from the Olympic cauldron, taking the flame to the Stade de France to prepare for the games in Los Angeles in 2028.
By the end of the competition, China and the United States tied for the top position in the gold medal count, both winning 40 in total. Host country France took home 16 gold medals, behind Australia (18) and Japan (20).
On the final day of the Games, Li Wenwen placed first in the women’s +81kg Weightlifting, scoring another gold medal for Team China.
In the last and crucial moments of a close game, U.S. women’s basketball took home the gold over France in the finals.
Japan’s Kagami Yuka took home the gold in the women’s freestyle 76kg wrestling, winning over Team USA’s Kennedy Alexis Blades, who took home silver, and Tatiana Renteria Renteria from Colombia and Milaimy De La Caridad Marin Potrille from Cuba, both who took home the bronze.
The final days of the event were not without controversy.
American gymnast Jordan Chiles was ordered to return her bronze in the floor exercise after Olympic officials overturned an appeal from her coach. The U.S. Olympic Committee said they would still appeal the decision.
The next Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, USA, from July 14 to July 30, 2028.
