Mexico is about to overhaul its judicial branch by giving people the power to elect local, state, and supreme court judges.

The decision required sweeping constitutional changes. Mexico’s ruling party, Morena, has the power to make such changes to the Constitution after winning a supermajority in the lower house of Congress and majorities in the Senate and state governments in this June's elections.

However, some critics argue the changes will strengthen the ruling party and undermine the nation's system of checks and balances.
