U.S. President Donald Trump has promised to “Make America Great Again,” but what time period is he referring to when he says ‘again’? According to Trump, it was around the tenure of his predecessor William McKinley. McKinley, the 25th U.S. president, governed America when businesses still shipped goods by sailing ships and steam locomotives.
McKinley also presided over a period of U.S. expansionism, winning the Spanish-American war, and after a bloody suppression, absorbing the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Hawaii, along with what is now called American Samoa. McKinley was a staunch advocate for high tariffs on imports.
CGTN’s White House Correspondent Nathan King has this report on Trump’s embrace of McKinley.
