June 19 is the celebration of Juneteenth in the U.S. — the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free. This year’s celebrations come amid growing national tensions adding urgency and reflection to what is traditionally a festive occasion. Ediz Tiyansan attended the celebrations in a historically Black neighborhood in Los Angeles.
