U.S. tariffs on Brazilian coffee may jolt consumers

New U.S. tariffs on Brazil took effect Wednesday August 6, with duties previously set at 10 percent surging to 50 percent. Many imports, however, are exempt from the tariffs. Brazil’s vice president says the new rates apply to just over a third of its U.S. exports. 

But one commodity that is not exempt may shake up the market in both countries, and that’s coffee.
