The independence of the world’s largest central bank, “the Fed,” is back in the spotlight this Thursday, Sep. 4.
Lawmakers held a nomination hearing for one of Donald Trump’s advisers to join the Federal Reserve temporarily.
The hearing took place just days after Trump upended convention by firing one of the Fed’s governors. His authority to do this is now being challenged in court.
The President’s opponents claim he’s trying to take over the Fed and overturn a longstanding convention that it work independently of the White House. Owen Fairclough reports.
