Mexico's programs lifted 13.5M out of poverty, but 5M still struggle

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is about to complete her first year in office.

The country's independent statistics agency says her administration is reducing poverty in a country marked by decades of inequality.

But a little over five million people, many of them indigenous Mexicans from the southern states of Chiapas, Guerrero and Oaxaca, still live in extreme poverty.
