Trump’s restoration of Confederate statues

Owen Fairclough

Donald Trump’s first presidency was partly defined by one of the most divisive issues in the United States - the legacy of the Civil War and the Confederacy of mostly southern states that fought to defend slavery. Debate over that issue was reopened during the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement.

Protestors toppled statues and monuments to Confederate leaders and others associated with the oppression of minority communities. State and local authorities followed suit, removing many more. But in his second term, Trump has called for the restoration of these monuments, and celebrated the return of one Confederate statue located just steps from the U.S. Capitol.
