Paraguay is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of soybeans, a crop that underpins its economy. Yet despite strong global demand, the landlocked South American country does not export soy directly to China, the world’s biggest buyer. Instead, shipments are rerouted through neighboring countries, a situation farmers and lawmakers say is driven by diplomatic considerations and limits Paraguay’s competitiveness on the global market.
