China, sometimes referred to as the “factory of the world,” has done more than reshape global manufacturing. It has helped support America’s largest trade gateway, the Port of Long Beach in California.

China’s export boom in the late 1990s and later becoming a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001 triggered a surge in trade that doubled container volumes and forced massive infrastructure expansion.

Two decades later, that same China-U.S. trade continues to anchor the U.S. West Coast ports at the center of global commerce, even as geopolitical risks mount.
