An Ecuadorian preschooler and his father are back home in Minneapolis after being released from a Texas immigration detention center, according to Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro. Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian, had been held for more than a week after immigration agents detained them outside their suburban Minneapolis home and transferred them 1,300 miles to a family detention facility in Texas.
Castro said he personally escorted the pair back to Minnesota, calling the release a victory for advocates pressing the Trump administration over its immigration enforcement tactics and the detention of children.
On Saturday, Jan. 31, a U.S. federal judge granted an emergency request and ordered the release of the boy and his father. The detention was another example of the Trump administration's legal battles with federal courts over the administrations’ immigration and enforcement tactics and detainees’ rights.
