The United States and Colombia have had a lengthy history of collaboration, but recent tension between the two presidents has put that all under strain.
2025 started off rocky, with Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro Refusing US military planes carrying deported migrants. U.S. President Donald Trump responded with a threat to increase tariffs by 25 to 50 percent, violating the two country’s Free Trade Agreement.
The crisis was quickly overcome through diplomatic means, but that wasn't the end of the bilateral strains.
