Opening statements kicked off in a Los Angeles courtroom on Monday, Feb. 9, accusing Meta, the parent company of Instagram, and Google’s YouTube of intentionally designing their platforms to be addictive to young users and harmful to their mental health. The landmark trial which is expected to last six to eight weeks could reshape how the world’s biggest tech companies are held accountable for the impact of social media on children and young people.
