George Floyd’s legacy endures

Six years after the murder of George Floyd by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, the case continues to shape national conversations about race, policing, and justice in the United States.

Floyd’s death in May 2020 sparked worldwide Black Lives Matter protests and renewed calls for police reform. While Chauvin remains in prison, efforts to pass federal policing legislation named in Floyd’s honor have stalled in Congress.

Meanwhile, the site where Floyd was killed is being redeveloped into a permanent memorial and community space as activists and residents reflect on the lasting impact of his death.
