The Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC hosted a special evening on May 30, 2026, bringing together teachers, students, and families from a Maryland youth pickleball delegation that had traveled to China earlier in the year. The event celebrated the premiere of the China Trip Documentary, a film capturing the stories of young Chinese and Americans connecting through pickleball and becoming true friends. In his remarks, Ambassador Xie Feng pointed to a significant milestone: Chinese President Xi Jinping recently replied to a letter from Chinese and U.S. students, noting that the initiative to invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study over five years has reached its goal two and a half years ahead of schedule. The Ambassador emphasized that this is "more than an inspiring number, but a powerful example of young people from our two countries reaching out to one another across the Pacific — and a youthful promise for the future of China-U.S. relations."

The delegation from Montgomery County, Maryland, had done far more than play pickleball during their February visit to China. Off the court, they made dumplings, tried sugar-figure blowing, painted opera masks, visited flower markets, wrote Spring Festival couplets, and watched lion dances, acrobatics, Sichuan Opera and face-changing performances, experiencing a truly authentic Chinese New Year. The trip took them across China, from north to south, and from major cities to smaller communities, where they visited villages, towns, and neighborhoods, gaining a multi-dimensional view of life in today's China. As Ambassador Xie noted, one student, Emily, observed that "the real China is very different from media narratives. What you see with your own eyes is far more vivid and far more real than anything you may read online or in books."

Ambassador Xie drew a pointed diplomatic parallel from the sport itself. "China and the U.S. are like two players on the same sports court," he said. "We play by the rules and respect one another. Competition, where it exists, should be healthy and positive, guided by rules and aimed at mutual improvement." He framed the broader bilateral relationship in similar terms, calling 2026 "a milestone year for China-U.S. relations," the year China begins its 15th Five-Year Plan and the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence. Evoking the legacy of ping-pong diplomacy from over fifty years ago, Xie declared: "From ping-pong to pickleball, the paddles have changed. But our peoples' shared wish for friendship remains as strong as ever."

Looking ahead, the Ambassador placed particular hope in the role of young people on both sides. "When the younger generation rises to its responsibilities, the world will have a brighter future," he said, expressing hope that young people in China and the United States would "stay grounded, think globally, and work together." He also issued a direct call for political follow-through, saying he hoped "the U.S. side will work with us to deliver on the common understanding between our two presidents,"  a reference to the landmark meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart held in Beijing roughly two weeks before the event. With their two presidents having charted the course, Xie urged all present to carry forward the spirit of "Ping-Pong diplomacy" through pickleball and write new stories of China-U.S. friendship with the passion of youth.
