ICE ends reporting of deaths after detainees are released

ICE will no longer report deaths occurring within 30 days of a detainee’s release, reversing a policy adopted in 2021. The change comes as the agency reports 18 deaths in custody during the first five months of 2026, according to The Washington Post.
