Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout stage goal on Thursday, July 2, as Portugal beat Croatia 2–1 in a dramatic comeback victory, which included a late cancelled goal for Croatia.

But the night's most emotional moment came after the final whistle. On the first anniversary of Portugal player Diogo Jota's tragic death, Ronaldo wore Jota's No. 21 shirt as the Portugal squad held it aloft in an emotional tribute.

Jota, one of Portugal's most talented forwards and a Liverpool star, was killed alongside his brother André Silva in a car crash in Spain on July 3, 2025.
